Sunlight
Sunlight is a reflection on missing the natural world while living beneath man-made brightness. Through tired eyes, enclosed rooms, and brief moments of darkness, the poem wonders how much the eyes can bear before another day disappears.
Oh, darling, how I miss you.
In the morning, I rush, nearly arriving out of time.
A moment after I arrive, you brighten the world,
making everything visible and exposed.
I was supposed to see you, but I am enclosed.
Man’s light strikes the walls and bounces back onto my face.
Everything seems okay to me.
I am now not privileged with a space that has a window.
Maybe I could have let you strike and bless my eyes,
and let fresh air heal my lungs, though man’s air blesses my skin.
Perhaps one day I may be privileged, but that day you won’t be useful.
Or maybe I do not need that space.
Two eyes on a monitor, focused are they.
What comes from the monitor and the roof lands on them.
They fight to witness properly.
Do they know they are fighting?
I think they should not know, for what aid is there in it?
Would they close? What would they gain from it?
Suddenly, there is no light from above.
Fair darkness, as if collected from the remains of each past night.
My eyes can now fight only one.
An imagination of everything taking place inside my eyelids.
We hear voices of applause.
The man who brought this sensation of darkness smiles with satisfaction.
I assure you, it is always a man, though not the same one.
Maybe this helps for this moment we’re in now.
I’m told to enjoy the moment. What will happen is already planned.
I always think that maybe, in one way or another, I am playing a part in that planning.
It’s almost time. I don’t seem to have another life other than my home.
Or maybe today I am heading somewhere.
I get out of a glamorous, brightful world.
Do I realize my darling is gone?
Another day passes by.
Perhaps I do not realize this. Maybe I will be reminded one day.
Or I won’t be.
But is it that bad? I still see the remains.
Until I arrive somewhere, everywhere is somewhere.
Because man’s light is everywhere.
How long can my eyes bear this?
